Title: Evolution of buzz pollination
Abstract: Buzz pollination occurs when bees extract pollen from flowers with specialised morphologies using high-power vibrations. This type of floral-deployed vibrations are produced with the same thoracic muscles that power flight, yet only about 17% of bee genera are known to buzz-pollinate, and we currently do not know why some insects buzz flowers while others do not. Among plants, floral morphologies associated with buzz pollination occur in thousands of species and represent a striking example of convergent floral evolution. In this talk, I will present some of our work on how buzz pollination works, describe its phylogenetic distribution among plants, and present some hypotheses for its evolution.
