BRC Community Art Proposals

BACKGROUND

The Biodiversity Research Centre (BRC) occasionally receives proposals for art projects to enhance the BRC community space. This document will serve as a guide to assist a BRC member to create a new proposal, and ensure projects are carried out in a way that is consistent with BRC and UBC processes for maintaining public spaces.

How to submit a Community Art Project Proposal

The BRC can consider proposals for projects that are biodiversity related and align with the BRC’s core mission to understand and conserve the diversity of life on earth through research, education, and outreach. Research: To understand the spectrum of biological diversity, its evolution, and its preservation through research at all levels, from genes to ecosystems. Education: To train experts in the study of biodiversity and the application of biodiversity science. Outreach: To promote understanding and appreciation of biodiversity and to provide independent advice on biodiversity stewardship to governments, the private sector, and the public.

Proposals should be inclusive and respectful of UBC policies related to working in a respectful environment. You are encouraged to work with Katie Beall and the BRC Director to develop your proposal.

WHAT TO CONSIDER FOR EACH PROPOSAL

Provide your name, email address, and name of the BRC faculty member co-sponsoring the proposal.

  1. Idea and Purpose: Brief summary, including proposed location. How does this project relate to biodiversity? Who is the intended audience (internal BRC community or external visitors)?

  2. Benefits to community: What is enhanced or expressed through the proposed art?

  3. Feasibility, logistics, and costs: How will the work be created, installed, maintained and removed? For each of these activities, please outline who will do the work and any associated costs. Consider any potential costs associated with the project. Will there be a need for funds to cover modification of existing spaces, security, materials and installation? You are encouraged to work with the BRC Admin to develop this section, as there may be some UBC practices that we need to follow. Describe any potential or secured Funding Source(s) for the project.

  4. Responsibility and Maintenance: Who will be responsible for maintaining the artwork over the lifetime of the piece (installation, duration and decommissioning). How long do you plan for the art to be in place?

If you submit your own document, please address each of the 4 items above. Or, provide information in the webform below.
