Title: Seeds of change: evolutionary ecology of germination timing in a variable and changing world
Abstract: In variable and changing environments, timing critical life history transitions such as emergence and reproduction with favorable conditions can be difficult and even impossible. Organisms inhabiting unpredictable and changing environments have strategies to cope with this uncertainty, which can include bet hedging, plasticity to cues, or a combination of the two. In this seminar, I will discuss my research on the evolutionary ecology of germination timing in relation to these strategies, as well as the possible consequences of those strategies for population dynamics and persistence in the face of climate change.
