Abstract: Many authors have commented on the disconnect between academic biodiversity research and the practical problems of achieving conservation on the ground. I will present experience of attempts to apply science to the problems of forest landscapes in Indonesia where poor people live in areas with exceptional biodiversity. Long-term studies of these landscapes have yielded counter-intuitive conclusions. We challenge the conventional wisdom that development initiatives such as oil palm, roads and mining are always bad for biodiversity. We argue that it is necessary to engage with local people and their institutions and develop a deep understanding of context in order to design conservation interventions. Our research aims to work with communities to identify ways of improving their prosperity in ways that favor biodiversity.
